Extremely rare
Lot 1708
CRUSADERS. Edessa. Baldwin I (?), 1098-1100. Follis (Bronze, 26 mm, 5.81 g, 7 h). Bust of Virgin Mary orans; in field to left, MP; in field to right, ΘV. Rev. X - B / B - K (stands for XRICTЄ BOHΘЄI BAΛΔOVINO KOMH = 'Christ, help Count Baldwin' in Greek) Large plain cross with wedges in angles set on steps. Metcalf, Crusades, -. MPS 2 corr. (bust of Virgin Mary not Christ) or MPS 14. Porteous 11 corr. (bust of Virgin Mary not Christ) or Porteous -. Wäckerlin -. Extremely rare. Edge split and with traces of overstriking, otherwise, about very fine.

The attribution of this issue is somewhat controversial: it could be an issue of either Baldwin I (MPS 2) or of his cousin and successor Baldwin II (MPS 14) - provided MPS 2 and MPS 14 are, in fact, not one and the same issue. A future study of the succession of overstrikes on early Crusader issues might help to solve the riddle
